A public health alert has been issued for a product sold nationwide at Walmart.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) issued the alert for Better Goods frozen chicken curry empanadas, due to it being misbranded and including an undeclared allergen. FSIS did not do a recall since the product is no longer available for purchase.
The chicken curry empanadas may actually contain the apple cinnamon variety, FSIS has indicated. Apple-cinnamon contains a known allergen, milk, and is not properly labeled. Consumers with milk allergies should not consume the product.
The empanadas were produced on Nov. 14, 2024, and packaged on Nov. 20 and 21, 2024. They have the establishment number “P33967” and are labeled:
- 9.6-oz. cardboard packages labeled as “better goods TRADITIONALLY CRAFTED Chicken Curry Empanadas” with “BEST BY: 05/21/26” or “BEST BY: 05/22/26” and “EST. P33967” on the side of the box
The producing establishment notified FSIS that its distributor received four consumer complaints about the product’s mislabel, though no confirmed adverse reactions have been reported.
Consumers with the products are urged to throw them away or return to the place of purchase.
Consumers with food safety questions can call the toll-free USDA Meat and Poultry Hotline at 888-MPHotline (888-674-6854) or send a question via email to MPHotline@usda.gov.
