The evening will begin with a pre-screening social hour at 6:30 p.m., followed by the film at 7:30 p.m. The event honors Juneteenth — celebrating Black freedom, resilience, and the ongoing pursuit of equality and justice. The screening is part of Cucalorus’ commitment to elevate Black voices through film and community gathering. It is proudly sponsored by the National Black Leadership Caucus and the Wilmington News Journal.

Guests arriving early can enjoy a social hour featuring Susan Warwick of the New Hanover County Beekeepers Association and Pine Grove Bee Works. Warwick will have a hive on display and locally harvested honey available for purchase.

“The Secret Life of Bees,” which was filmed in Wilmington in 2008 and is set in 1964 South Carolina, tells the story of 14-year-old Lily Owens. She flees her troubled home to uncover truths about her late mother’s past, finding refuge and healing within a supportive community.

This screening marks the second installment of Cucalorus’ Summer Film Series. For the full series lineup and to purchase tickets for “The Secret Life of Bees,” visit jengos.eventive.org.
