Widespread Panic took the Riverfront stage for a two-night show Friday and Saturday with a unique take on its setlist. Its second set on Friday started with songs that went in alphabetical order, “Airplane,” “Blight,” and carried the theme into Saturday’s sets.

John “JB” Bell (guitar, vocals), Jimmy Herring (guitar), Dave Schools (bass, vocals), Domingo “Sunny” Ortiz (percussion), Duane Trucks (drums), and John “JoJo” Hermann (keyboards, vocals) have been returning to Wilmington the last two years since helping open downtown’s Riverfront Park venue in 2021.

The group has had a long-standing relationship with the Port City, often playing local clubs in the early ’90s and returning in the mid-aughts for Azalea Festival shows.

The Athens, Georgia-based band has been touring for three decades with its Southern rock blues and improvisation.

Friday night WSP kicked off with “Stop-Go,” and also played a cover of Warren Zevon’s “Lawyers, Guns and Money.”

The second set was comprised of fan favorites including “Disco,” “Holden Oversoul” and a cover of Bloodkin’s “Can’t Get High.” The group closed out the encore with a cover of Guess Who’s “No Sugar Tonight/New Mother Nature.”

For the hearing impaired, Edie Jackson was on stage signing with American Sign Language throughout the course of both nights.

Tom Dorgan of MoonFrog Media captured photos from the first night of WSP’s show.
