We start this week with the latest – and perhaps final – chapter in the long strange story of Justin Brochure.
Two years ago, Homeland Security began investigating Brochure for possession of child pornography. The investigation included the Oak Island Police Department since, at the time, Brochure was living in a house owned by his mother, Cin Brochure, the town’s mayor.
Brochure was ultimately arrested, kicking off a series of strange events: Oak Island’s police chief resigned, then his top assistant resigned, then the lead detective on the Brochure case was reassigned. The town’s attorney attempted to censor public documents linking the mayor to the arrests.
Then, Brochure was re-arrested, and his bond reduced from $2 million to $50,000 — a reduction based on his girlfriend’s testimony that Brochure had not, and would not, be around children. But, based on eyewitness testimony and video footage, this was a lie.
And yet, Brochure walked free in a plea bargain, and neither he or his girlfriend were charged with perjury or obstruction of justice.
So, what happened? We get into it.
Also this week: issues in the New Hanover County School district continue to come to the surface.
That includes new revelations about the Forest Hills Spanish immersion program. The former Principal recently accused Superintendent Dr. Tim Markley of ‘throwing her under the bus,’ asking why the school’s board and administrators have refused to take responsibility for the program’s racial inequity. We get what that means — plus we take a look at recent ‘celebrations’ of outgoing Deputy Superintendent Dr. Rick Holliday, including one where the media was thrown out, and another the took place in private at the Sherriff’s Office.
Lastly, a trip to Carolina Beach … with a pretty serious detour for Wilmington’s traffic lights. We’ll explain why some lights are so long and then – finally – arrive in Carolina Beach in time for the latest installment of the town’s attempt to modernize their public decency laws to allow more revealing bathing suits (and, yes, thongs are still illegal in Kure Beach).
