WILMINGTON — If you need a reason to go out and have a few cold ones on a Wednesday night look no further than Pints for a Purpose at Flytrap Brewing.

The Friends of the New Hanover County Arboretum are hosting a fundraising event on Wednesday from 6 – 9 p.m. at Flytrap Brewing; $1 of every pint sold will go to the organization.

“Friends of the Arboretum is the non-profit volunteer organization that supports the mission of the New Hanover County Arboretum. We are ambassadors and advocates for the Arboretum and County Extension. We seek to raise funds to enhance the gardens, and hold events that expose New Hanover County residents to take advantage of all of the services at County Extension and to visit the gardens, which are free and open daily during daylight hours,” Laura McCabe, a board member of the organization said.

The Arboretum might be located off one of the busiest corridors in the city but there are still plenty of residents who have never even visited.

“It amazes me the number of NHC residents who have never visited, or just think that this is the place to drop off “dirt samples!” One of our board members, Harry Smith, had the idea to participate in the local brewery scene’s ‘Pints for a Purpose.’ Being friends with Mike and Emily at Flytrap Brewing, they agreed to be our first venue. So this Wednesday, Flytrap will donate $1 of every pint sold, to the Friends of the Arboretum,” McCabe said.

The Arboretum, located off Oleander Drive, is open year-round and is free to visit; the Arboretum has been in operation since 1989.

“The seven-acre Arboretum has one of the largest water gardens in North Carolina — home to multi-colored koi, turtles and frogs. Parents and grandparents bring children to the Arboretum just to feed the fish. A giant sea serpent stands watch over all,” according to the group’s website.

The site of the Arboretum was the former home to a school that burnt down in the early 1980s.

“In 1982 a fire destroyed the Bradley Creek School, and in February 1984 New Hanover County commissioners appropriated $200,000 to turn the school’s site into a home for the Arboretum and Extension Service. After four years of hard work by countless volunteers, the New Hanover County Arboretum formally opened on October 5, 1989,” according to the county’s website.

Flytrap Brewing is located at 319 Walnut Street in Wilmington.
