CAROLINA BEACH — Hundreds gathered in the the open-aired bungalow bar of Lazy Pirate on Wednesday night to pay their respects to Danny Joe Swinson, 57, who passed away over the weekend.

“I don’t know even know how you would describe Danny except to look around and see – in January on a Wednesday night, they said there was traffic coming over the bridge, backed up, just to get here to celebrate his life. I mean that’s Field of Dreams right there. ‘If you build it they will come,’ and that’s Danny Jo. He helped us build this,” Lazy Pirate co-owner Jamie Aiken said.

After friends stood at the stage to share memories of Swinson, local reggae bands D.H.I.M. and Signal Fire played before a packed house.

In honor of the many charitable events he had helped organize over the years, the memorial was held as a fundraiser for the Pleasure Island H.E.L.P. Center in Swinson’s name.
