BRUNSWICK COUNTY — For the past four years, South Brunswick High School has been offering young ladies in Brunswick County the opportunity to receive formal dresses and accessories free of charge.
SBHS will be hosting the Prom Closet on Saturday, April 14 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the school’s cafeteria.
The school is accepting donations on weekdays between 8 a.m. and 3 p.m. and will accept donations until Friday, April 13. In addition to dresses, SBHS is accepting unused makeup, shawls, purses, jewelry and shoes.
According to this year’s coordinator, Leonor Thomas, Choral Director at SBHS, the school already has seven rack’s worth of dresses that have been donated.
“Typically, we have anywhere between 60 to 80 girls come to the event, but we hope to reach as many girls in the county come as possible,” said Thomas. “Often times, many of the girls end up donating the dress back to the school after the event since they only need the dress for one night.”
A local volunteer, Debbie Ilardi, will be at the event to offer on-the-spot alterations to garments.
“A decent number of girls cannot afford to buy something new, so it’s nice to be able to help out during this special time,” said Thomas.
