Brunswick County cancels school for students on Wednesday

This story was updated Tuesday at 2:30 p.m. to include school closings for Pender County

BRUNSWICK COUNTY — Hurricane Matthew has passed, but Brunswick County is still feeling the weather’s wrath. Brunswick County Schools will be closed for students tomorrow the district announced Tuesday.

“Brunswick County is very large,” the district’s announcement states. “Hurricane Matthew impacted different regions of our county in different ways. At this time there are many roads in our beach communities and the western part of our county that remain impassable to car and bus traffic. Additionally creeks and rivers throughout the county are still rising. These creeks and rivers will continue to impact travel. ‘

“The decision to close school for students is out of an abundance of caution for their safety,” it states.

The workday is option for district staff, according to the district.

“Staff should consider individual circumstances and determine if it is safe to travel to their assigned schools,” the announcement states.

The district’s training session, “Elementary Reading Foundations,” will still be held. Staff members who are scheduled for the training, but who cannot travel to the site will be added to a future session.

In addition, buses will be on the road tomorrow so that the district can determine which routes remain impassable after Hurricane Matthew passed through on Saturday.

“This information will help school officials make a better determination as to how quickly we can return to a regular operating schedule and which communities may need alternative transportation routes,” the announcement states. “We will continue to update our operating schedule as information becomes available.”

Pender County
