WILMINGTON — George J. Kopec Sr., 84, of Wilmington, North Carolina, went home to be with the Lord on October 14, 2026, with his beloved wife, Carol, by his side.
George grew up in Garfield, NJ. After graduating from Garfield High School, he enlisted in the U.S. Army, where he trained in electrical engineering. Following his honorable discharge, George went to work for Curtiss-Wright, before spending most of his career with Pitney Bowes, retiring in 2001. He also worked for Barry’s Formal Wear for many years.
George’s greatest blessing began in high school when he met Carol, the love of his life. They married in 1963 and shared 63 devoted years together, building a life grounded in faith, family, and enduring love. In 1970, they moved to Mahwah, New Jersey, where they raised their family and created countless treasured memories. After 35 happy years there, they made Wilmington their full-time home in 2005.
George will be remembered for his integrity, remarkable work ethic, quick wit, and always having the nicest lawn on the block. Above all, he cherished his family and delighted in surprising them with special experiences they would remember for years to come. One of his greatest joys in life was being “Pop Pop” to his five grandchildren.
A natural athlete who was always active, George exceled at every sport or hobby he pursued. He loved skiing and made numerous trips to out west. He and Carol even found a way to ski in Italy and Switzerland during one of their summer trips to Europe. After moving to Wilmington, George took up golf and, within just a few years, shot a hole-in-one. He was especially proud that Carol had achieved a hole-in-one before he did, and he loved knowing they were among the rare couples who had both accomplished the feat.
George also had an adventurous spirit and loved taking his family to unique places. His children will always treasure the three-week cross-country trip they took in 1976 to celebrate America’s bicentennial. After many trips to Europe with Carol, George created another especially meaningful family memory by taking the entire family to Italy in celebration of their 50th wedding anniversary.
George is survived by his beloved wife, Carol; his children, Joseph (Andrea), Donna (Mark), and George; and his grandchildren, Alexandra, Zachary, Elizabeth, Emily, and Shane Kopec. He was predeceased by his parents, Joseph and Emelia Kopec, and his sister, Cynthia Rulli.
The memories we shared with him will remain in our hearts forever, bringing comfort, laughter, and gratitude for a life well lived. He will be forever loved, fondly remembered, and dearly missed.
A funeral Mass will be held at a later date.
