WILMINGTON — 67 years of love, laughter, faith, and a light that will never fade.
Some people walk into a room and brighten it. Others walk into your life and change it forever. Carmen Ortiz was both.
Born on June 12, 1959, in Manhattan, New York, Carmen carried a little piece of that city with her everywhere she went. If you spoke to her for even five minutes, you probably would have guessed where she was from. She had a personality that could fill a room, a fashion sense all her own, a quick wit, a playful spirit, and a smile that could brighten even the hardest day. Beautiful inside and out, Carmen was a woman who could make an ordinary moment feel extraordinary simply by being there.
On October 20, 2026, at the young age of 67, Carmen’s spirit left this earth, leaving behind a family and countless loved ones who will forever carry her in their hearts. Though her time here feels far too short, the love she gave and the memories she created will continue to live on in everyone fortunate enough to have known her.
Behind her beauty, humor, and unmistakable personality was a woman of incredible strength and courage. Life had taken her through more than most people knew, yet she never allowed her past to outshine the light within her. She continued to love deeply, laugh wholeheartedly, give generously, and find reasons to enjoy life. Her strength was not simply in what she endured, but in the kindness she continued to show, the joy she continued to share, and the love she gave so freely. Her light shone brighter than anything she had ever been through.
Above all else, Carmen loved Jesus with everything she had in her. Her faith was not something she kept to herself; it was a part of how she lived, how she loved, and how she faced each new day. She praised the Lord every single day, carrying her faith in her heart and sharing that love with those around her. Her faith was a beautiful part of who she was, and the love she had for her Savior will forever remain part of her legacy.
Carmen was selfless in a way that is becoming far too rare in this world. If someone needed help, she wanted to help. If someone was hungry, she wanted to feed them. If someone needed love, she had love to give. She had a way of making people feel welcome, cared for, and important. If you were fortunate enough to receive one of her hugs, they were the kind that wrapped around you with warmth, made you feel safe, and reminded you that, for that moment, everything was going to be okay.
Family was one of Carmen’s greatest joys. Nothing made her happier than seeing her loved ones gathered together. She would always find a reason to cook something for you, because feeding the people she loved was one of the many ways she showed her heart. And if you complimented someone else’s food, there was a good chance she would tell you she could probably make it at home herself—and make it even better! And honestly, she probably could. It was just another little piece of her charm.
Carmen also knew how to make life fun. She loved shopping and would turn the drive there and back into her very own concert, jamming out to her favorite music and making herself the life of her own party. She loved the fair, especially the rides that made everyone else think twice. While others might have hesitated, Carmen was often ready to brave the big, scary rides, making sure there was still plenty of room for some good fair food along the way. She had a playful spirit, a love for adventure, and a gift for finding happiness in the little things. And, of course, we cannot forget her love for giraffes, a special favorite that was just as memorable as the woman herself.
Carmen was also a woman who took pride in her education and accomplishments. She graduated cum laude from Miller-Motte College with a degree in Business, a testament to her intelligence, determination, and hard work. She was smart, capable, and full of potential, but the greatest measure of her life was never found in a title or a degree. It was found in the countless hearts she touched and the love she left behind.
Her greatest legacy, however, will always be her family. Carmen leaves behind her five grown children, who will forever hold a piece of her heart: Michael, Stephanie, Jessica, Deana, and Tina. She also leaves behind her many beautiful grandchildren, who were blessed to have her love in their lives. Through her children and grandchildren, her love will continue to grow, reaching future generations through the lessons she taught, the traditions she created, the laughter she inspired, and the kindness she modeled every day.
To her children, Carmen was more than a mother. She was their best friend, safe place, biggest supporter, and one of the greatest influences in the adults they became. That kind of love does not end when a life on earth does. It becomes part of who we are. It lives in our choices, our laughter, our courage, our kindness, and the way we love other people because someone once loved us so well. A mother’s love has a way of becoming part of her children forever, and Carmen’s love will continue to guide theirs in ways both big and small.
Everyone who knew Carmen had a reason to love her. Perhaps it was her beautiful smile, the twinkle in her eyes, her unmistakable New York accent, her silly sense of humor, or the way her laughter came straight from her belly and made you want to laugh right along with her. Perhaps it was the way she showed up for people, the warmth of her embrace, or the way she could make a difficult day feel a little lighter.
Being around Carmen felt like sunshine on your face on a cool, breezy day. Warm, comforting, refreshing, and somehow capable of making everything feel a little more beautiful. She was the kind of person you didn’t simply meet; you felt her. And once you did, you carried a little bit of her with you.
Though our hearts are broken by her absence, we find comfort in knowing that the woman who praised Jesus every day is now held in His eternal love. We imagine her surrounded by the peace she believed in so deeply, free from life’s burdens, and resting in the arms of the Savior she loved with all her heart. While we grieve the time we can no longer spend with her here, we hold tightly to the promise of faith, the beauty of the memories she gave us, and the hope that this separation is not forever.
There will be songs that make us think of her and make us smile through our tears. There will be family gatherings where we will wish she were standing in the kitchen, cooking up something delicious. There will be fairs, giraffes, shopping trips, familiar sayings, and little everyday moments when we will feel her absence most deeply. And there will be laughter, too, because Carmen gave us far too much joy for her story to be told only through tears.
We will carry her in the way we care for one another, in the food we prepare with love, in the courage we find when life gets hard, in the kindness we extend to strangers, and in the faith that reminds us love is stronger than death. We will remember her not only for the life she lived, but for the way she made us feel alive when we were with her.
Family and friends will gather this Saturday, October 24, 2026, at LifePoint Church 3600 College Rd, Wilmington, NC 28412 from 10 AM to 2 PM to celebrate Carmen’s beautiful life, honor her memory, and share the love and stories that will keep her spirit alive in their hearts.
We don’t like saying goodbye. It has never felt right for a love this big, a life this beautiful, or a mother this unforgettable. So, instead, we will say what she said to us, in that cute accent we will forever long to hear:
“See ya later, alligator.”
Until we meet again, Mom, may you know just how deeply you are loved, how fiercely you will be missed, and how beautifully you will live on in every heart you touched.
Thank you for the hugs, the laughter, the lessons, the meals, the music, the memories, and the unconditional love. Thank you for being our strength, our sunshine, and our mama. Thank you for showing us that even after life’s hardest storms, a beautiful spirit can still shine.
You were loved here on earth, and you will be loved for all eternity.
Rest peacefully in the arms of Jesus, sweet Carmen.
We love you, Mom. Always and forever.
See ya later, alligator. ❤️
