WILMINGTON — Virginia Ramsey Combs passed away on October 29, 2026, at Novant Health New Hanover Regional Medical Center.
Virginia was born on October 19, 1944, in Denver, Colorado, to Gene Ramsey and Lucille Ramsey. She grew up in Nitro, West Virginia, where she graduated from Nitro High School.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Gene Ramsey and Lucille Ramsey; her sister, Genie Fisher; and her brothers, Nicholas Ramsey III, and Joseph Ramsey.
Virginia began her working career as a flight attendant for Piedmont Airlines. She later worked as a bank teller at the only bank on Wrightsville Beach. Her longest career was with the Wrightsville Beach Police Department, where she served as secretary to the Chief of Police for 33 years. During those years, she developed close friendships with the police officers and staff, who became an important part of her life.
She is survived by her loving husband, Chester D. Combs; her two daughters, Kimberly Stafford (Mike) and Kristie Thiry (Craig); and her stepdaughter, Kristie Horton (John). She also leaves behind five grandchildren: Sara Stafford Guiffre (Zak), Kate Stafford Lee (Andrew), David Stafford, Corey Thiry, and Kaylin Thiry; two step-grandchildren, Clay Horton and Harper Horton; and several nieces and nephews: Erik, Anna (Jeff), Erin, Margaret, Dan, and Johnny (Shannon).
Those who knew Virginia will remember her for her wonderful personality and unmistakable sense of humor. She had a special gift for making people laugh and could brighten a room with her quick wit. She was also strong-willed, independent, and very much her own person. She never did anything she didn’t want to do!
Above all, Virginia loved her family dearly, and that love was returned by those who knew and loved her. She was a strong force in her family, with a personality that left a lasting impression. She also had a special place in her heart for her beloved dogs, including Ruby, Bailey, Spanky, and the many other four-legged companions who were part of her life over the years.
Virginia was truly one of a kind and will be sorely missed by all who loved her.
