BURGAW — With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Barbara J. Novakowski, a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, and friend. Barbara left this world peacefully at home in Burgaw, NC, surrounded by her husband and children, just two weeks after bravely facing a diagnosis of cancer and immediately going into hospice care. Her journey on this earth began in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, where she was born to Louise and Alfred Chissler on July 19, 1939.
In 1967, Barbara married the love of her life, Bill, and together they built a beautiful family and life in Montrose, Pennsylvania, before retiring to the scenic coast of North Carolina, first Wilmington and then Burgaw. Their enduring partnership spanned 59 years, marked by love, laughter, and mutual support. Barbara was a stay at mom for many years, raising six wonderful children.
Barbara was a devoted mother to her children; William Novakowski and partner Keith of Bel Air, Mark Novakowski and wife Rachel of Montrose, Adam Novakowski of Savanah, Tanya Novakowski of Burgaw, and the youngest Tara Arnette and husband Justin of Burgaw. A proud grandmother to Krysten and Travis of Montrose, and Emily in Savannah. Her legacy also lives on through her four beautiful great-granddaughters, who brought her immense joy and pride.
Preceded in death by her son Chris and her brother Alfred, Barbara is survived by her loving husband Bill, her children, grandchildren, and sister Louise. Her family was her greatest treasure, and she cherished every moment with them either in person or talking on the phone.
Barbara was a beacon of strength and love, known for her strong will and friendly nature. Her life was a testament to the power of family, community, and faith. She graduated from St. Nicholas in Wilkes-Barre and was a dedicated member of St. Marks Catholic Church for 30 years in Wilmington and often made rosary beads with her church ladies. A couple times a week she also enjoyed the company at the senior center, where she formed many lasting friendships.
Barbara found joy in the simple pleasure of bird watching. Her family fondly remembers her passion for feeding the hummingbirds on the back porch, who would zoom around and sit on a tiny swing all day long. The secret hummingbird food recipe, as written on the container she used for many years: Four cups of water boiled for 8.5 minutes in the microwave and then add 1 cup of sugar.
In honor of Barbara’s life and her compassion for others, contributions can be made to the Lower Cape Fear Life Care Foundation or St. Mark Catholic Church both located in Wilmington, NC.
