WILMINGTON — Robert “Bob” James Schladensky, Sr., passed through Heaven’s gates on August 14, 2026, leaving behind a lifetime of wonderful memories and a family and circle of friends who were made better simply by knowing him.
Born on September 8, 1940, Bob was the son of George W. Schladensky and Marie Weisler Schladensky.
Bob graduated from Davie High School in 1958 where he was very active. He was honored to serve as president of his senior class and he participated in several sports including football.
Bob attended Clemson University in South Carolina, where he studied business. His loyalty to Clemson never faded, and Saturdays often found him cheering on his beloved Clemson Tigers. When Clemson wasn’t playing, the Carolina Panthers could also count on him as a devoted fan.
Bob proudly served his country in the United States Army and was stationed outside of Paris, France. His military service afforded him the opportunity to see parts of the world, and of all the places his travels took him, Italy remained his favorite.
Adventure suited Bob well, especially when it involved being on the water. He was a skilled sailor and the proud owner of a 28-foot Lancer sailboat, “Free Spirit”, finding great enjoyment behind the helm and out on the open water.
When not on the water, Bob could often be found tending to something growing. He had a remarkable green thumb and loved planting flowers, shrubs, and trees. Calling his yard “well-kept” would hardly do it justice—it often looked as though it belonged in the pages of Better Homes and Gardens. His yard was a reflection of the care and attention Bob gave to the things he loved.
And Bob certainly knew how to enjoy life. He loved beach music and loved to dance right along with it—even if his dancing could occasionally provide as much entertainment for everyone else as it did for him. He had a wonderful sense of humor, a big heart, and a friendliness that made people feel comfortable almost immediately.
Bob was simply one of those people who never seemed to meet a stranger. Warm, welcoming, and genuinely interested in those around him, he naturally gathered a wonderful circle of family and friends throughout his life. People enjoyed being around Bob because he enjoyed being around people.
Above all, family mattered deeply to him. He treasured the Schladensky Family Reunions at Lake Norman and the Fourth of July celebrations that brought everyone together. He also made it a point to attend every family wedding or event he possibly could.
Bob was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, George F. Schladensky; his sister, Bette Re Shettsline; his grandson, Jacob Schladensky; and his stepson Michael’s wife, Janice Jaeger.
Left to cherish his memory are his beloved wife, Margaret Faye Shannon; his son, Robert J. Schladensky, Jr. and wife Kellie; his daughter, Beth Schladensky Cunningham and husband Doug; his stepsons, Paul Manz and wife Martha, and Michael Manz; his sister, Linda Geselbracht; his grandchildren, Sara Schladensky, Joshua Schladensky, Ben Cunningham, Zeke Cunningham, Taylor Manz, Brandon Manz, Caleb Spears, and Kaci Spears; his great-grandchildren, Elaina Cunningham and the soon-to-arrive Baby Cunningham. He also leaves behind many extended family members and dear friends who loved Bob and will miss his warm presence in their lives.
Bob leaves behind the memory of a man who welcomed people warmly, laughed easily, loved his family deeply, and understood the importance of showing up for life’s meaningful moments.
A Memorial Service to honor Bob’s remarkable life will be held on Saturday, September 26, 2026 at 3:00pm at Harbor United Methodist Church.
