WILMINGTON — Joseph Stephen Justice, Sr., 92, affectionately called “Big Joe” passed from his earthly life Wednesday, July 29, 2026 at home with family and lots of love and happy memories.
He was born April 19, 1934 in Wilmington, the son of Lee Ander Justice and Louise Poston Justice. In addition to his parents Joe was preceded in death by his wife Ruth Worrell Justice and many brothers and sisters.
Joseph is survived by his sons, Steve Justice, Jr. (Debbie) and Larry W. Justice (Laura); grandchildren, Jennifer Thigpen (Vance), Joey Justice III (Erica), Shannon Lanning (Chris), Stephanie Justice, and Cory Justice (Jessica); great grandchildren, Zachary, Lucas, Allie, Cooper, Nolan, and Madalyn; many extended family members and friends, all who dearly loved Big Joe.
For many years Joe was a faithful, devoted member of Pike Rocky Point Presbyterian Church. He was retired from Babcock & Wilcox in Wilmington as an engineer after working over 30 years.
Big Joe loved the outdoors and all of God’s bountiful nature – fishing, bird watching, and hunting. Each year he grew a vegetable garden big enough to feed family and many others. Another pastime enjoyed was watching NASCAR. Big Joe was a kind man, thoughtful of others, generous heart, and Christian spirit who loved his family and was a good friend to many. He will truly be missed.
A Celebration of Life will be 2:00 p.m. Sunday, August 9, 2026 at Quinn McGowen Funeral Home Burgaw Chapel with Rev. Danny Justice conducting the service.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home following the service.
