WILMINGTON — George Michael Baka, 79, of Wilmington, NC, died on Wednesday, July 8, 2026, at Bradley Creek Health Center. George was born on November 28, 1946, in Hazelton, Pennsylvania, to Veronica and George Baka. George was preceded in death by his loving wife Tamiko, “Tami,” and his brother Thomas.

George graduated from Villanova University with a degree in Nuclear and Electrical Engineering. In February 1969, he was called to active duty with the United States Air Force. In February of 1970, George met Tami within 24 hours of his arrival at Kadena Air Force Base, Okinawa. They married in Okinawa on January 14, 1972, and were married for 50 years, living in Okinawa, California, Virginia, and eventually in Wilmington, NC.

George went on to work for General Electric until his retirement. George was a member of the Ryukyu Philatelist Specialist Society and was an accomplished philatelist. His passion for stamps was evident by his numerous albums that he cherished and which brought him tremendous pleasure. George also enjoyed taking photographs.

At Bradley Creek Health Center, he was liked by so many and was involved in numerous activities. He eventually became their favorite Bingo caller. George has no surviving family members but many caring friends who will cherish the memories of their times together.

A memorial service will be held 11:00 AM Friday, July 17, 2026, at Wilmington Funeral Chapel. Father John McGee will officiate the service. Military honors will be provided by the United States Air Force.

A reception will follow the service where friends can greet and fellowship.

George and Tami’s cremains will be placed in Jacksonville at the state veterans cemetery at a later date.
