HAMPSTEAD — Kenneth “Kenny” Brian Phillips, 63, of Hampstead, North Carolina, passed away unexpectedly on Saturday, June 13, 2026.
He was born on November 22, 1962, in Charlotte, North Carolina, the son of Fred Calloway Phillips, Jr. and the late Patricia Walker Phillips.
Kenny was affectionately known as “Big’un,” a nickname inspired by his towering six-foot-seven stature. Kenny worked at the Surf City Pier for many years and was loved by all who knew him. He was known for his big heart, gentle spirit, and generosity with his time. To so many, he was simply a good man. Kenny will be deeply missed by all that had the pleasure of knowing him.
Kenny is survived by his stepson, Nathan Thurman and his wife, Libby; his father, Fred Calloway Phillips, Jr; his sisters, Donna Hollibaugh, Lori Pridgen and her husband, Charlie; 2 step grandchildren; many nieces, nephews; and several lifelong friends.
In addition to his mother, Kenny was also preceded in death by his brother-in-law, Billy Hollibaugh.
A celebration of life will take place at 11:00 am on Saturday, July 11, 2026, at The Gathering Church in Surf City with Bobby Owings and Nathan Thurman officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church. Attire is casual.
