WILMINGTON — It is with profound sadness and hearts full of cherished memories that the family of Michael Timothy Calhoun announces his passing on May 30, 2026. Michael was a beloved husband, devoted father, and adored grandfather.
He was raised in Hope Mills, NC and moved to Wilmington, NC in 1972. He graduated from the University of North Carolina at Wilmington with a Bachelor’s of Science degree. After graduating, he operated and ran his own commercial cleaning company, Sure Clean of Wilmington, until his retirement in 2024.
Michael is survived by his beloved wife of 57 years, Marianna Calhoun, the cornerstone of his life and his companion through every season. He is also survived by his two children: Sarah Calhoun (Brad Smith) of Cary, NC and Jonathan Calhoun (Mary Vance Calhoun) of Wilmington, NC.
The true joy of Michael’s life were his four granddaughters — Presley (11), Stella (8), Anna Blake (9), and Palmer (6). They knew him as their devoted granddaddy or GaGa. They will carry his love and spirit with them always.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Mary Calhoun, father, Joe Harlan Calhoun, brother, Joe Harlan Calhoun Jr. and is survived by his sisters Peggy Wingate (Mitch) and Dottie McLean.
Michael lived a life defined by hard work and service to his family. Those who knew him remember a man of steady character — someone who showed up fully for his family. He cherished spending time with his grandchildren. He was always so proud of his children and talked about them to anyone that would listen.
His legacy is not measured in grand gestures but in the consistency of his presence with his family. It didn’t matter how small or how large, if you needed him, he was always there. You could always count on him to help. He was a man who loved his family and was deeply loved by them in return — and that love will continue to echo through the lives he helped to shape.
The Calhoun family will receive friends from Noon until 1:00 p.m. Monday, June 8th, 2026 at Wilmington Funeral & Cremation, 1535 S. 41st Street, Wilmington, NC 28403, with a memorial service following at 1:00 p.m. in the funeral home chapel.
He is gone from our sight, but never from our hearts.
