HAMPSTEAD — Martha Gay Fleming-Burns Morton of Hampstead, NC died May 12, 2026.
Born May 31, 1937 in West Palm Beach Florida to Samuel James Fleming, II and Marion Beatrice Kerr. In 1949 she was adopted by Carl Robert Burns.
She attended Rosarian Academy in West Palm Beach and graduated in 1955 from St. Mary’s School in Raleigh, NC from 1955-1957. She was a student nurse at Presbyterian Hospital but left her senior year to marry James Allen Morton II. Then in 1983 she graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill where she was a Johnson Nursing Scholar and a member of Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Nursing Sorority.
She retired in 2013 after a 30-year diverse and interesting career spanning Hospital, Home Health, County Jail, Public School and Alcohol & Drug Abuse nursing. Along the way, she was nationally certified as a Correctional Health Care Professional & School Nurse.
