WILMINGTON — Janet D. Croom, affectionately known as Jean, passed away peacefully on May 9, 2026, in Bolivia, NC, at the age of 98. Born on February 2, 1928, in Brooklyn, NY, Jean lived a life filled with devotion, adventure, and love.

Jean spent her professional years as a dedicated librarian, first in New York and later in Wilmington, NC. Her love for books and learning left a lasting impression on those she served, fostering a sense of curiosity and understanding in her community.

Outside of her professional life, Jean had a zest for life that was truly inspiring. She loved to square dance and spent many joyful evenings twirling and laughing with friends. Jean and her beloved husband, Martin H. “Marty” Croom, Jr., who preceded her in death, shared a deep passion for travel. Together, they embarked on numerous RV adventures across the country, creating cherished memories over their 70 years of marriage.

Jean’s faith was a cornerstone of her life, guiding her every action as a devoted Christian woman. Her kind heart and generous spirit were evident to all who had the pleasure of knowing her.

Jean is survived by her sons, Steven Croom and his wife Monique of Supply, NC, and Kevin Croom and his wife Carol of Marblehead, Mass. Her family and friends will forever cherish the warmth and wisdom she imparted.

A visitation will be held at Wilmington Funeral & Cremation, 1535 S. 41st Street, Wilmington, NC 28403, on Monday, May 18, 2026, from 11:30 am to 12:00 pm, with a funeral service to follow at 12:00 pm. Interment will take place at Coastal Carolina State Veterans Cemetery in Jacksonville, NC at 2:00 pm, where Jean will be laid to rest beside her beloved Marty.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Jean’s memory to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, to further her generous spirit and commitment to others.

Jean will be deeply missed by all who knew her, but her legacy of love and faith will live on in the hearts of her family and friends.
