WILMINGTON — Ralph Edward “Eddie” Gibbs, Sr., a cherished soul known for his gentle nature and friendly spirit, passed away on February 28, 2026, in Wilmington, NC. Born on October 17, 1941, in Hendersonville, NC, he lived a life full of simple joys for 84 years.
Eddie spent much of his early life working various jobs, earning the respect and friendship of many. Later in life he found joy in spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was a man of humble interests, embracing the earnest pleasures of life with an open heart.
An avid reader, Eddie enjoyed books from all genres, finding solace and adventure within their pages. Known for his sociable nature, he never met a stranger, a sentiment affectionately shared by his grandson Ethan. Eddie found delight in the company of others, particularly during breakfast gatherings with fellow “old timers.”
One of Eddie’s great joys was loafing around and enjoying the sights of the places he lived. This leisurely pastime provided him with contemplation and a deeper appreciation for the world around him.
He was preceded in death by his beloved parents, Dexter and Freida Gibbs; his brother, Jerry Gibbs; his wife, Viola Gibbs; his daughter, Paulette Clark, and his son Jeffre Hopper. The memory of these treasured relationships remained with him always.
Eddie leaves behind a legacy of love through his surviving son, Ralph Gibbs, Jr.; his grandchildren Ethan, Ty, Jennifer, Maurice, Christy, and Latosha. His warmth and kindness will be profoundly missed by those who had the honor of knowing him.
