HAMPTEAD — William “Bill” John Leahy, a devoted husband, loving father, proud grandfather, brother, uncle, and loyal friend, passed away on February 19, 2026, surrounded by the love of his family.
He shared 53 devoted years with his beloved wife, Janice Leahy. Together, they built a home filled with love and laughter, raising their four children. Bill was immensely proud of his wife and family who brought him great joy. Whether offering steady advice, a helping hand, or simply a warm smile, “Poppy” was always there.
Born on October 5, 1952, Bill grew up in Shrewsbury and Peabody, Massachusetts, alongside his brothers. The values he learned in his early years—family, perseverance, and integrity—remained the foundation of his life.
Bill proudly dedicated over 30 years of service to the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA), where he was respected for his strong work ethic and commitment. After retiring, he continued his public service for another 10 years with the Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT). His decades of service reflected his deep sense of responsibility and pride in supporting his community.
He and Janice raised their family in Saugus, Massachusetts, creating countless memories there before moving to North Carolina a few years ago to enjoy retirement together. In every place he lived, Bill built not just a house, but a home.
A true New Englander at heart, Bill had a lifelong love of Boston sports. He especially cherished cheering on the Boston Red Sox, rarely missing a game and proudly celebrating their victories. Whether watching from home or talking baseball with family and friends, those moments were some of his favorites and became treasured memories shared with his children and grandchildren.
Bill also had a deep love for golf. He enjoyed spending time on the course, appreciating the camaraderie, competition, and quiet moments the game provided. Whether playing with friends or family, golf brought him relaxation and happiness throughout the years.
In keeping with his generous spirit, Bill gave the gift of life and sight through organ and tissue donation to Miracle in Sight. Even in passing, his compassion and selflessness will continue to make a difference in the lives of others.
Above all, Bill’s greatest accomplishment was his family. His love was steadfast and unconditional, and his presence was a source of comfort and strength. He will be remembered for his devotion, his steady guidance, and the deep love he carried for his wife, children, grandchildren, brothers, sisters- and brothers-in-law, nieces, nephews, and extended family and friends.
He leaves behind his children and their significant others, William J. Leahy Jr. & Tina Carrabba, Tara & Dave Boule, Jamie Leahy, Ryan & Melissa Leahy. His grandchildren, Matthew, Kendal, Kaden, Parker, Cameron, Cailee, Mason and Libby. His cherished dogs, Mocha and Glady, will guard his sweet memory.
In addition to his wife, children, and grandchildren, Bill was predeceased by his parents, Richard and Eileen Leahy. He also leaves behind his brothers, Richard Leahy and his wife Susan and Robert “Midge” Leahy and his partner, Rose; his brothers-in-law Peter Ludwig and his wife, Deb; Jim Ludwig and his wife, Carol; and Scott Ludwig and his wife, JoAnne; along with six cherished nieces and nephews, and many extended family members and dear friends who will miss him deeply.
Celebration of Life will be shared at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation in his memory to Northeast Animal Shelter, 347 Highland Avenue, Salem, MA 01970.
