Alvin Floyd Mizelle, 89

Alvin Floyd Mizelle (Wilmington Funeral & Cremation)

WILMINGTON — Alvin Floyd Mizelle, Age 89, passed away peacefully on January 31, 2026 in Wilmington, NC.

Alvin was born October 14, 1936 in Newport News, Virginia to William Floyd Mizelle and Helen Elizabeth Smith.

He graduated from Newport News High School in 1954 and received a Track & Field scholarship to the University of Richmond (Virginia). After a call to return to the VEPCO (Virginia Electric and Power Company) Gas Department as a result of his impressive work ethic while part-time, Alvin chose to leave the University and begin his full-time career with VEPCO and start a family with the love of his life, Jean Ann Harvey. He worked for VEPCO (which became Virginia Power, then transferred to North Carolina Power (in Elizabeth City, NC), all now known as Dominion) for his entire career of’37 years before retiring in 1992. Alvin was a man of few words but of many talents, which included extensive painting of portraits, landscapes, birds and boats, along with guitar playing, hunting, and most of all, golfing.

He also served at Hertford (NC) Baptist Church, both as a Deacon and long-term choir member. Alvin had a self-taught talent of home construction; he was heavily involved in building three of his pre- and post-retirement homes. (including a log home) in Hertford, NC.

In his last retirement years, Alvin lived and enjoyed his favorite (and ideal) life – living in a house on the golf course, playing golf (until age 85), and even working in the golf cart barn – all at Albemarle Plantation in Hertford.

He is survived by his wife Jean of 67 years and by his children, sons Michael Mizelle (Stephanie) and Randy Mizelle (Amanda); (5) grandchildren: Christopher Mizelle (Amber), Erica Clark (Sean), Peyton Luke (Ken), Tanner Mizelle, and Kylie Elizabeth Mizelle, and (9) great grandchildren: Logan, Lucas, Cody, Kylie Marie, Kai, Cohen, Elliott, Asa, and soon-tobe-born Preston (to Peyton and Ken).

A celebration of his remarkable life will be held 3:00 PM Saturday February 21, 2026 at Wilmington Funeral & Cremation Chapel.
