WILMINGTON — Joan Marie Brennan, age 86, passed away peacefully surrounded by her family on January 30, 2026. A vibrant woman of intellect, grace, and diverse talents, Joan leaves behind a legacy of professional achievement and deep devotion to her loved ones.
Early Life and Career
Born on July 26, 1939, to Joseph and Rose (Roux) Wenzel, Joan grew up in Kingston, NY. After graduating high school, she married her high school sweetheart, Jerry Brennan. The couple lived in Sawkill, NY, before returning to Kingston to raise their three children.
In her professional life, Joan navigated the complexities of early computer programming at IBM in Kingston. Her expertise took her as far as Germany to collaborate with international colleagues, a testament to her skill in a demanding and evolving field.
A Life of Passion and Adventure
Joan later married the love of her life, Max Wunderlich. Together, they embraced an active and adventurous lifestyle, sharing passions for golf, skiing, and global travel. Their journeys took them across the world to Alaska, Hawaii, Amsterdam, and Croatia, though they always made time for their annual golf trip to Myrtle Beach with lifelong friends. Joan and Max’s circle of friends in their Bedford community in Raleigh became a very important part of their lives.
Closer to home, Joan was known as an exceptional cook and baker. She took immense pride in preparing exquisite meals, particularly during the holidays when her home became a showcase for family recipes and tasteful décor. She also had a “quirky” side, often scouring flea markets and auctions with her dear friend Barbara in search of hidden treasures to restore.

A devout Christian, Joan was a member of St. Luke’s Catholic Church in Raleigh, NC. She is survived by:
- Her Children: Michelle (Bruce) Collins, Sherry (Frank) Hallenbeck, and Patrick (Robin) Brennan.
