WILMINGTON — Billy Wayne York, aged 79, passed away peacefully on January 9, 2026, in Wilmington, NC. Born on May 24, 1946, in Liberty, NC, Billy lived a life marked by dedication to his work and community.
Billy retired after a long career as a telephone lineman with Bell South. Following his retirement, he found fulfillment in serving others as a transportation driver with the National Red Cross, a role he embraced for 30 years. His commitment to helping those in need was an inspiration to all who knew him.
He was a faithful member of the Beach Community Chapel in Carolina Beach, where he cherished the fellowship and support of his church family.
Billy was preceded in death by his beloved parents, Howard and Maide York, his devoted wife Wanda McGhee York, and a dear son. He is survived by extended family members in the Ramseur and Liberty communities, and will be fondly remembered by a special family friend, Roger Carillon, Wilmington, NC, along with many friends, and neighbors, who will miss his kindness and warmth.
Billy Wayne York’s enduring legacy of service and friendship will be carried forward by those whose lives he touched.
