OAK ISLAND — Russell Clifford “Russ” Freitag, aged 71, of Oak Island, North Carolina unexpectedly passed away on December 18, 2025.
Russ was born in Long Island, New York on September 3, 1954, son of the late Horace Walter Freitag and Evelyn Becker Freitag. He was a hardworking Manager for the American Red Cross for many years. His most enjoyable hobbies were baking and being the OKI Pirate. Russ was also known as a loving husband, beloved father, and always a Fantastic Pop Pop.
Survivors include his loving wife of 42 years, Joyce Freitag of Oak Island; children, Adam Freitag and wife Ashley of Tennessee and Paula Midkiff and husband Michael of Virginia; grandchildren, Tristan, Theodore, Lorelei Midkiff; brother, Jerry Freitag and wife Jennifer of Florida; mother-in-law, Anne Hinnant of Oak Island; and his favorite canine companions, Neptune and Oake Freitag.
In accordance with his wishes, a private family service will be held at a later date.
