Thomas Patrick Mooney (Andrews Mortuary and Crematory)

HAMPSTEAD — Thomas Patrick Mooney, of Hampstead, NC, passed away on November 15, 2025, at the age of 79. Thom was born February 24,1946 in Philadelphia, PA to Charles and Margaret Mooney, Irish immigrants.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his siblings: John, James, Daniel, Charles, Anna Mae West, Mary Ellen Balush, and Margaret Wodarski.

Thom was an Army veteran, serving honorably during the Vietnam War. He then began a very successful interior design career. Starting with residential design, he eventually moved to commercial, specifically bars and restaurants. Most notable, Egypt and the Moshulu in Philadelphia. He traveled worldwide as a furniture and accessory buyer, and designed showrooms for the furniture market in Highpoint, NC.

Outside of work he volunteered as a Cub Scout Leader, was a member and former president of the Valley Forge Chapter of the Vietnam Veterans of America, and organized a Toys for Tots program.

He was known for his sense of style and impressive event and party planning. He loved movies, making a point to see the Academy Award nominations each year, and always had a suggestion for your next Netflix watch. He was an advocate for veterans, LGBTQ+, mental health, and democracy in America.

Thom is survived by his husband and partner of 30 years, Steven Bonk, children, Kris McGinnis, Kelly (Nick) Shumate, Kevin (Amy) Mooney, and their Mother, Judy (Ernie) DiBenedetto, bonus sons, Steve (Magda) Bonk and Greg Bonk, sister-in-law, Betty (Daniel)
Mooney, grandchildren, Jaida, Talia, Aaron, Sarah, Natalie, Nicole, Emarie and Ben, and many nieces and nephews.

A memorial for family and close friends will be held in Philadelphia early 2026. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to an animal rescue or veterans’ charity of your choice.
