Robert Ernest Hill (Wilmington Funeral & Cremation)

WILMINGTON — Robert Ernest Hill, affectionately known to many as Bob, passed away peacefully on September 24, 2025, in Wilmington, NC, at the age of 98. Born on June 17, 1927, in Providence, RI, Bob led a life filled with adventure dedication, and love.

Bob served his country with honor as a merchant marine for the United States Coast Guard during World War II and further contributed to national service with the Department of the Army Transport. After his time in service, he pursued a career as a skilled carpenter, a trade that brought him much pride and satisfaction. He was a devoted member of the United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners of America, Local Union #327. Alongside his beloved wife, Lorraine, he also enjoyed a successful venture into the decorating business.

In his retirement years, Bob found joy and camaraderie on the golf courses of Quincy, MA, and The Villages, FL. His pride in his golf games and friendships was evident to all who knew him. A man of many talents, Bob was also a proficient pool player.

Bob’s warm nature left a lasting impression on everyone fortunate enough to cross paths with him. His good humor was cherished by those who spent time with him.

Preceding Bob in death were his parents, William and Elizabeth (nee Kane) Hill, his dear wife Lorraine Hill, and his son Robert Hill. He leaves behind his surviving grandchildren, Matthew B. Hill and Audra L. Hill, his daughter-in-law Debra Hill McLaughlin, and his niece Dorothy Curtis.

Bob is also survived by his long-time partner, Shirley C. Martin, whose two daughters and their families provided care and comfort in his later years.

Bob’s cremains will be laid to rest at Wollaston Cemetery in Quincy, MA, next to his cherished wife and son, bringing them together once more.

In loving memory, we celebrate Bob Hill’s remarkable journey. He served his country and his good nature and nice disposition will be remembered.
