WILMINGTON — Charles Franklin Mutters, a dedicated serviceman and beloved family man, passed away peacefully on July 22, 2025, in Wilmington, NC, at the age of 77. Born on January 8, 1948, in Ashland, KY, he lived a life marked by service, commitment, and love.

Charles Mutters retired as a Master Gunnery Sergeant after over 30 years of honorable service in the United States Marine Corps. His exemplary military career was distinguished by numerous awards including the Purple Heart Medal, Bronze and Silver Star Medals, National Defense Service Medal, Southeast Asia and Vietnam Service Medals, Republic of Vietnam Campaign, Vietnam Cross of Gallantry, Vietnam Campaign Medal, Combat Action Medal, Navy Commendation Medal, Pistol Badge Expert, Presidential Unit Citation, and the Meritorious Service Medal. He completed advanced military education through Mortarman School, Recruiters School, and the Curriculum Developers Course.

A man of varied interests, Chuck enjoyed college football and basketball and was particularly fond of watching old action movies. An avid athlete, he excelled as a long-distance runner and relished playing racquetball. Raised in the Baptist faith, his spiritual upbringing shaped his values and character throughout his life.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Charles Franklin Mutters, Sr. and Irene Ison Mutters, along with his siblings.

He is survived by his devoted wife of 56 years, Juanita Hutchinson Mutters; his children, Jimmy Mutters and wife Susann, Robert Mutters and wife Caroline, and Karen Ivey and husband Darren Ivey; and seven cherished grandchildren, Ashleigh, Brody, Peyton, Emma, Cora, Alice, and Wesley. His faithful companion, a special dog named “Sadie”.

He will be laid to rest at 12 noon Tuesday at the Coastal Carolina State Veterans Cemetery in Jacksonville, NC, with full military honors, provided by the Camp LeJeune United States Marine Corps Funeral Honors Detail.

May he rest in peace, knowing he leaves behind a legacy of courage, dedication, and love.
