WILMINGTON — James “Harold” Carter, 85, of Raleigh, NC, passed away peacefully on July 21, 2025. Born in Fayetteville, NC to Bainbridge and Wilda Carter, Harold lived a life defined by integrity, service, and love for his family.
He graduated from East Carolina University, where he met Peggy Davis, the love of his life. After college, Harold served as Captain in the United States Marine Corps during the Vietnam War. Following his military service, he and Peggy settled in Raleigh, where Harold worked in banking before founding JH Carter Builder, Inc. in 1972, a company he led with pride and purpose until his retirement in 2016.
Harold was known for his deep faith, warm presence, and unwavering commitment to those around him. He treasured time spent with family and friends, especially at Lake Gaston, where time could slow down and all could be together.
He is survived by his sons, Dan (Jen) Carter of Carolina Beach, NC, and Jon (Christina) Carter of Boone, NC, and his grandchildren Brielle, Emery, and Adrian who were the apple of his eye.
The family extends heartfelt gratitude to the care team at Bradley Creek Health Center in Wilmington, NC, whose compassion and support meant so much to Harold and Peggy in their final years.
A celebration of Harold’s life will be held at Millbrook United Methodist Church in Raleigh, NC on Friday, August 1, 2025 at 2:00 p.m., followed by a reception at the church.
