WILMINGTON — Mary Burton Coombs, beloved mother, grandmother, and friend, passed away peacefully on June 28, 2025, in Wilmington, North Carolina, the place of her birth, at the age of 79. Born on May 28, 1946, Mary was the daughter of the late C. D. Burton, Sr. and Frances James Burton.
A dedicated and loyal employee, Mary devoted over 40 years of service to Dupont, where she worked tirelessly until her well-earned retirement. Her colleagues remember her as a diligent and supportive co-worker, always bringing warmth and kindness to the workplace.
Mary’s heart was filled with joy in life’s simple pleasures. In her leisure time, Mary enjoyed playing video poker and cherished spending time with her family, creating memories that will be treasured forever.
In 2016, Mary made Burgaw, North Carolina, her home, after being born and raised in Wilmington. Her spirit and love enriched the lives of many in both communities.
Preceding her in death are her parents; her loving husband of 50 years, Don Benjamin Coombs, Sr.; and her son, Daniel Brian Coombs. Her legacy lives on through her devoted children, Donna Coombs Lee and husband William “Billy”, and her son Don Benjamin Coombs, Jr., both of Burgaw, NC; a dear brother C. D. Burton, Jr. of Wilmington; She is also survived by her dear sister, Martha Ellen Burton Lamb of Hephzibah, GA. Mary’s loving presence will be deeply missed by her five grandchildren: Brittany Watson, Brooke Ottaway, Amber Eldred, Benjamin Coombs, and Madison Myers, and her twelve great-grandchildren, along with many cherished family members and friends.
In keeping with her wishes, there will be no formal services. Instead, family and friends are encouraged to remember Mary’s radiant smile her Sassy spunky personality and her zest for life.
