BURGAW — Julia Raye DeVane Newton, 94, of Burgaw with loving children at her side passed gently from her earthly life on Friday, May 16, 2025.

She was born October 9, 1930 in Bladen County, one of seven children born to Hubert C. DeVane and Zilphia Barnhill DeVane. In addition to her parents, Julia Raye was preceded in death by her husband, James Sivey Newton; and five siblings.

Julia Raye is survived by her daughters, Brenda Newton Enfield (Mark) and Wanda Newton Goff (Doug); son, James “Jimmy” Sivey Newton, Jr. (Teresa); grandchildren, Amy Sullivan, Robin Patrick (Shawn), Micheal Gore (Nathalie), Chris Mitchell (Amanda), and Timmy Newton; great grandchildren, Skylar Casteen (Cameron), Hunter Patrick, Caitlin Gore, Dalton Gore, Waylon Mitchell, and Wyatt Mitchell; great great grandchildren, Haven Casteen, Kaylee Casteen and Karson Casteen; sister, Mary Hutchinson; many extended family members and friends.

The history and formation of the United States of America was near and dear to Julia Raye’s heart. For many, many years she was a dedicated and loyal member of the Battle of Rockfish Creek Chapter North Carolina Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution where she had served as Regent, historian, and in many other capacities. She was a member of Moores Creek Baptist Church.

Julia Raye was an extraordinary Woman of God whose resounding faith and love for her family was unmatched. Her bright and shining light often served as a guide to those around her. Those who knew Julia Raye remember her passion for spending time with family and cooking delicious meals for those she loved. She was a true example of what it meant to be a Wife, Mother, Grandmother, Great Grandmother, Great Great Grandmother, Sister, Aunt and Friend. Her presence in our lives will be forever missed, but we find solace in knowing she is at peace and rejoicing with her almighty Father and family already in heaven.

The funeral service will be 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, May 21, 2025 at Moores Creek Baptist Church. The Rev. Gregg Newton and Rev. Jerome Bullard will conduct the service. The family will receive friends at the church one hour prior to the funeral service.

Burial will follow in Moores Creek Baptist Church Cemetery.
