Victoria “Fern” Vaquilar, 90

Victoria “Fern” Vaquilar (reader submission)

WILMINGTON — It is with heavy hearts and bittersweet gratitude that we announce the passing of Victoria “Fern” Vaquilar. She passed away in her home with family by her side on the morning of March 15, 2025, at the age of 90.

Fern, the youngest of thirteen children, was born to Charles and Georgianna Shackett on May 8, 1934. A devoted military wife for 50 years to Col. Rufo Vaquilar and loving mother to Wayne Vaquilar, Michele Kiger, and Kimberly Bledsoe, she leaves behind a legacy of resiliency, stubbornness, and laughter that will never be forgotten.

Fern will be deeply missed by her grandchildren Jennifer Kiger Bost, Austin Vaquilar, Samantha Kiger, Mallory Barnes, and Kelsey Bledsoe, as well as her great-grandchildren Rylan and Addison Bost and Kieran Barnes.

She was truly “one of a kind” and will always be remembered for the spirited stories she shared and sage words of wisdom she passed on.

A celebration of her life will be held on March 22 from 2-4 PM at Cambridge Village. The family kindly requests that attendees wear colorful clothing to honor her memory and spirit.
