WILMINGTON — Christian Humphrey Swiers, 87, of Wilmington, NC, passed away on March 1, 2025, at Bradley Creek Health Center in Wilmington, NC.
She was born to Madeleine Kellum Humphrey and George Dudley Humphrey, Sr., in Wilmington, NC, on March 21, 1937. Christian was predeceased by her parents, aunt Chloris Kellum, husband Dr. Willard Sigmund Swiers, brother G. Dudley Humphrey, Jr., and friend of over a decade, Dr. Roscoe H. Turlington.
Christian is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Christian Swiers Miller and Dr. Justin G. Miller, and granddaughters Kellum and Mae Humphrey Miller, all of Wilmington, NC; step-sons H. Clark Swiers and wife Mary of Roanoke, VA; Charles A. Swiers and wife Susan of Asheboro, NC; Wayne H. Swiers and wife Sandra of Brevard, NC; and 7 grandchildren. She is also survived by her brother Woodus Kellum Humphrey of Cullman, AL.
A Wilmington and Wrightsville Beach native, Christian graduated from New Hanover High School and Duke University.
A lifelong Presbyterian, Christian was an active member of First Presbyterian Church Wilmington, where she taught youth Sunday School, ushered, and was the funeral coordinator for many years. She also enjoyed membership in Cape Fear Country Club and the Carolina Yacht Club in Wrightsville Beach, NC.
The South End of Wrightsville Beach and the Carolina Yacht Club were places of great joy for Christian, where she spent countless hours boating, fishing, body surfing, and building drip castles. Under her tutelage, many family members and friends of all ages learned to catch a wave to shore and to build extensive and intricate drip castles. Christian will be remembered lovingly for her big smile and quick wit, her unwavering willingness to help in times of need, her love of Duke basketball and proper grammar, and her devotion to and pride in her family.
The family would like to thank the staff of Magnolia Tides at Bradley Creek Health Center for their loving and compassionate care.
A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, March 19, 2025, at First Presbyterian Church in Wilmington, NC, with a reception in Gilmour Hall to follow.
