WILMINGTON — Dr. Julius Robert “Bob” Johnson Jr., lovingly known as “Dr. Bob” to many, passed away peacefully at his home on Monday, March 3, 2025, at the age of 92.

Born in Richmond, VA, on November 28, 1932, Bob was the son of the late Julius and Mildred Johnson. He attended John Marshall High School (Class of 1950), where he served as Captain of the Corps of Cadets. A brilliant scholar, he graduated summa cum laude from Wake Forest College in 1954 when it was still located at its original campus. He went on to earn his Ph.D. in mathematics from Duke University in just three years—a remarkable achievement.

Bob’s passion for teaching led him to Wake Forest University, where he spent twelve years as a calculus professor. He played a pivotal role in the school’s integration, demonstrating his deep commitment to equality and progress. Though he later transitioned to a successful career in life insurance—earning recognition in the prestigious “Million Dollar Round Table” in his first year—his love for education never waned.

In 1990, Bob embraced a more relaxed lifestyle in Wilmington, NC. Even in retirement, he
remained dedicated to helping others, volunteering at Sunset Park Elementary School to teach children how to read. Many sought his wise counsel, valuing his keen intellect, steadfast faith, and generous spirit.

Bob’s greatest joys in life were his faith in Jesus and his beloved wife, Margaret. The two met at church, fell deeply in love, and shared more than 30 wonderful years together. A devoted member of Saltbox Church, Bob attended faithfully every Sunday, right up until his final days.

Bob’s final days were surrounded by unwavering love, compassionate care, and exceptional
professionalism from dedicated caregivers—Gert, Britney, Laurie, Nicole, Maribeth, Alex and
others—who became like family to both Bob and Margaret, and whose support brought comfort and peace.

He is survived by his loving wife, Margaret; his sons, Mark and Frank Johnson of Winston Salem, NC, and Stephen Highsmith of Hampstead, NC; as well as his cherished grandchildren, Eason and Ella Highsmith of Hampstead, NC.

He was predeceased by his parents and his son, Al Highsmith of Cary, NC.

A celebration of Bob’s life will be held on Saturday, March 15, 2025, at 2:00 PM at Saltbox Hub, 3233 Burnt Mill Drive #1, Wilmington, NC 28403. In honor of Bob’s relaxed and welcoming nature, guests are encouraged to dress casually.

Bob’s legacy of wisdom, kindness, and faith will live on in the many lives he touched. He will be deeply missed but never forgotten.

The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Saltbox Building Fund.
