Beatrice J. Stewart, 98

Beatrice J. Stewart (Wilmington Funeral & Cremation)

WILMINGTON — Beatrice Jacques Stewart, a devoted mother, cherished grandmother, and inspiring educator, departed this life on February 27, 2025, in Wilmington, North Carolina, at the age of 98. Born in Detroit, Michigan, on May 9, 1926, Bea led a remarkable life marked by love, kindness, and a deep appreciation for the world around her.

As a passionate school teacher, Bea dedicated many years to shaping young minds with unwavering patience and warmth. Her classrooms were filled not just with lessons from textbooks, but with lessons of compassion, understanding, and the importance of community. She believed deeply in the power of education to transform lives and left an indelible mark on her students, many of whom carried forward her teachings throughout their own lives.

Outside of her professional life, Bea embraced every opportunity to be with others, sharing her time and joy with family and friends. She was very proud of her volunteer work with the UNCW Adult Scholars; the Literacy Council of New Hanover County and the Novant Health New Hanover Medical Center. Bea and her husband Phil were patrons of the Thalian Hall.

Bea and Phil loved the ocean and enjoyed going down to the beach for a short stroll and just sitting and enjoying their time at the beach. Bea loved spirited discussions, especially with her family, on a wide variety of topics. She call those talks “mental gymnastics.” She was a avid reader and when her eyesight failed she got an iPad and listened to audio books with quite a fervor. When she passed away she had read about 300 audio books on her iPad! Her heart was a haven for those she loved, and her home resounded with laughter and the gentle hum of cherished conversations.

Bea’s legacy is carried forward by her children, Bob, Jim, and Kim; her four grandchildren who fondly remember her gentle guidance; and her seven great-grandchildren who brought her such happiness and pride. Her memory will also be treasured by countless friends and all those whose lives she touched.

She joins those who preceded her in death, including her beloved parents, Edward James Jacques and Beatrice Vollbracht Jacques; her husband, Phillip Stewart; and her brother, Donald Jacques.

Though her passing leaves a void, the warmth of her spirit and the strength of her values continue to inspire those who knew her.

At this time, no formal services are planned. However, Bea’s family invites you to share your memories and condolences here.

In honoring Beatrice legacy, let us all strive to live with the same grace, love, and openness that she so beautifully exemplified in her lifetime.
