Iris Christina McDermott, 89

Iris Christina McDermott (Wilmington Funeral & Cremation)

WILMINGTON — Iris C. McDermott, a vibrant and witty soul, full of kindness and dedication, passed away peacefully on February 21, 2025, in Wilmington, NC, at the age of 89. Born on October 8, 1935, in Little Marsh, PA, Iris lived a life filled with love, service, and community spirit.

After graduating high school, Iris pursued her passion for beauty and style by attending beauty school. She went on to own and operate her own beauty shop in Savona, NY, where she worked as a beautician and hair stylist. Her journey took a new turn when she and her late husband, Douglas, opened the Silver Top Diner in Addison, NY. Together, they ran the beloved establishment for over 40 years, serving not just food, but warmth and friendship to all who entered their doors.

Iris was also a dedicated member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles in Addison, NY, where she and Doug were instrumental in organizing the local Aerie. One of her greatest honors was in 1993 when she was elected Grand Madam President of the Fraternal Order of Eagles Auxiliary, a testament to her leadership and commitment. Her service to her local auxiliary continued until she moved to North Carolina to be closer to her family.

Iris’s contributions to her community did not go unnoticed; in August 2012, she received a Community Service Award, recognizing her countless hours of volunteer work with local organizations in Addison.

She was preceded in death by her beloved husband Doug, her parents Lynn G. Robbins and Emma (Rice) Robbins, and her brother Stuart Robbins. She leaves behind a legacy of love and family, survived by her daughter Sherry Mulhollen and her husband Larry; grandchildren Casey and wife Kara Scott; Vicky and husband Andy Britton, Scott and wife Clara Mulhollen; five great-grandchildren; brother Neal Robbins; and her very dear friend Richard Davis.

Iris was a hardworking, caring friend to many and had an unwavering love for her family, God, and country. She will be laid to rest alongside her beloved Doug in the Union Cemetery of Middlebury Township, returning to her roots in Tioga County, PA.

Services will be private, honoring her quiet strength and dignity. Her life was a testament to the power of community, love, and perseverance, and she will be deeply missed but fondly remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing her.
