WILMINGTON — Lucian Aloysius Mattes, 75, of Wilmington, NC passed away on December 24, 2024.
He was born January 7, 1948, in Johnstown, PA to the late George Lee and Marie Theresa Mattes. He is preceded in death by his wife, Rosemary Poole Mattes, parents and brother, Terry Mattes.
He is survived by his daughter, Christy Mattes Jewell (Wilson) of Wilmington and son Thomas of Louisville, Kentucky. Brother, Jim Mattes (Elaine) of Shawnee, KS, and brother, Robin Mattes of Greensburg, PA. Grandchildren Kathryn Jewell Camp (Jesse), Alex Jewell, Ella Mattes, Lainey Mattes, Macy Mattes and Campbell Mattes. Great Grandchild, Zachary Camp. Lou, appropriately known as Grumpy, was a devoted grandfather who never missed an opportunity to tell his grandchildren he loved them.
Lou was a 1965 graduate of Bishop McCort High School in Johnstown, PA. He earned an associate degree in Fire Protection and Safety Engineering from Rowan Technical Institute (1969). Lou worked for 25 years as the Safety Director for International Paper (Formerly Federal Paper) in Riegelwood, NC. He was past chairman of the Pulp and Paper Safety Association. Lou worked as a fire protection instructor where he trained generations of firemen all over the state of North Carolina. He was a life member and former Chief of the Myrtle Grove Volunteer Fire Department. He is a past member and Chairman of the New Hanover County Fire Commission. Lou was at his best helping others.
Lou’s faith and service to the community were very important to him. He was a beloved member of the Knights of Columbus, serving as Grand Knight. Most recently, he was the chairman for the annual charity golf tournament. He was also an active volunteer for Meals on Wheels and the Special Olympics.

A mass of Christian burial will be held at the Basilica of St Mary in Wilmington on Friday, January 10, 2025, at 11:00am. Please join the family in Tileston for a reception following the Mass.
