Shirley Marie Mikulas (Andrews Mortuary and Crematory)

WILMINGTON — Shirley Marie Mikulas, 95, of Wilmington, passed away November 9, 2024.

In addition to her parents, Shirley was preceded in death by her husband, Richard, her brother Frank, WW II MIA, her brother Samuel Calscibett (Calaby), her sisters-in-law, Arline Calaby and Carol Morgiewicz.

She is survived by her two sons Richard John Mikulas (Robyn) of Garden City, NY and Robert Frank Mikulas (Christine) of Monument, Colorado, five grandchildren Robert W. Mikulas (Brooke), Alexander R. Mikulas (Sydney), Holly C. Futch (Mikulas), Sara Mikulas (Caleb Kofahl) and Joseph S. Mikulas in addition to six great-grandchildren Wilder, Winston, Parson, Colter, Sonny, and Riley plus six nieces Cecelia, Lauren, Claire, Jacquelyn, Caroline, and Mary and six great-nieces and nephews.

Shirley graduated from Irvington High School, New Jersey and worked as a medical secretary in the former Newark City Hospital, St. Barnabus Hospital, and Irvington General Hospital. Retired from Dun & Bradstreet in 1987, she and her husband moved to North Carolina. While living in Hampstead they enjoyed playing golf and other activities of retirees traveling to Colorado and other states.

Shirley was a Seniors Health Insurance Information Program (SHIIP) volunteer since 1997 and was awarded the Mickey Hanula Award Statewide Volunteer of the year in 2006. She also volunteered at the Senior Resource Center as an intake clerk for Vita for 8+ years, Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) and “The Grads” Gifted, Retired, Active, Dedicated Seniors for 15+ years knitting baby hats for New Hanover Regional Medical Center (Novant). She also was a member of Scene III and a member of the North Carolina Basket Weaving Association.

Shirley and Richard were so thankful for the love and joy of their family and especially their grandchildren who are now adults making their way into our world. May they all be blessed with love and happiness Shirley and Richard showed throughout the 58 1/2 years of their married life.

Friends come and go throughout our lives, some become part of our family —-their friendship has been much appreciated and to all a “special thank you”.
