Eric Gordon Rooks, 86

Eric Gordon Rooks (Coble Funeral & Cremation Service at Greenlawn Memorial Park)

WILMINGTON — Eric Gordon Rooks, age 86, of Wilmington, North Carolina passed away on Monday, November 4, 2024.

Eric G. Rooks was born in Chiriqui, Panama on May 7, 1938. He was the eldest of 6 children (Estella, Lenny, Elsa, Veronica and Jean). Eric was a very stern person and took all of his roles in life very seriously. He believed that hard work and dedication would eventually pay off. While working at a mechanic shop selling tires and other car parts, Eric was presented with an opportunity to migrate to America.

Upon coming to America in the early 1960’s, he stayed focused on working hard to better his life. He worked at New Borough Cleaners and later trained to become a chef. He pursed his passion of cooking until his final retirement in 2011.When Eric settled in Brooklyn with his family, he met the love of his life, his “Queen” Maxine. Eric and Maxine were introduced by Cousin Vilma; their infatuation for each other was undeniable. Shortly after dating, they decided it was time to commit and build a life together. Eric and Maxine had 4 daughters, Michelle, Mildred, Yolanda and his name sake Erica. They were both dedicated to working hard to provide a better life for themselves and future generations. Eric’s hard work afforded him opportunities to work across the country. He worked in the Cookery in NYC, completed a year-long commitment in Missouri where he learned and perfected Cajun cuisine.

Eventually, Eric and Maxine decided to build and house and set up a life outside of the Big Apple. They moved to the Poconos, PA, this move was big for the entire family. “The House” in the Poconos served as a vacation home and getaway for their adult children and many grandchildren. It was also a safe haven for Eric and Maxine. They enjoyed clean mountain air, remote neighbors and Eric loved his role creating delicious meals for the thousands of visitors at Fernwood Resorts. Eric served as the head sous chef at Fernwood for about 20 years preparing meals such as prime rib, filet mignon, stuffed lobster tail and many more delicious meals. He loved working there so much, he had to retire 3 times before finally closing that chapter in his life at the age of 72.

In 2012, Eric and Maxine started yet another journey, and moved to Wilmington, NC. They originally moved to be closer to Maxine’s beloved sister Betty Williams. Unfortunately, she passed before they were able to settle in just 2 homes down from her. Eric and Maxine persevered, and continued to make a life for themselves in Wilmington, NC. Although, official “work” was done, Eric clocked in regularly doing his yard work or as he called it “playing in the dirt”. He enjoyed gardening and took much pride in the upkeep of the grounds. At one point they had their own mini “promise land” growing tomatoes, zucchinis, grapes, blueberries and they had a fruitful fig tree. Eric was always so proud of his harvest and enjoyed sharing with his family and loved ones.

Eric wasn’t all work and no play. Over his lifetime he managed to foster some really close friendships with Jay & Lissette, Ernesto & Penny, Carlos & Norma; Dungo & Josephine; Lorenzo and his favorite brother-in-law Lloyd. He also enjoyed watching sports like baseball, basketball and football. But there was no match for his wrestling. There was no bigger WWE fan, the whole family always knew Monday nights at 8 pm was a No, No! Watching the Smackdown brought him almost as much joy as playing his numbers (lotto).

After the passing of his Queen, Eric found it difficult to live life with real purpose. Maxine was his compass and she protected him more than he ever knew, which made his love and admiration for her even stronger. While he was the sole parent left for his girls, he tried his best as an 86-year young man to keep up with his family, the times and live a good quality life. He decided it was best to move to Atlanta, Ga to be closer to family. Mainly his sister Veronica who was filled with excitement upon his decision to be closer to her. Veronica recalls spending many days being his special co-pilot as he became acquainted with his new home. During his short time in Georgia, Eric was introduced to Living Faith Tabernacle by his niece Zonela. Eric and Zonela would regularly attend Sunday service and wrap up the day with an ice cream cone.

On April 7, 2024 Eric decided to rededicate his life to Christ and became a member of Living Faith Tabernacle. Although many miles away from his daughters and grandchildren, he found comfort in being close to his extended family in Georgia. Eric was very close with both his sisters Elsa and Veronica and the slew of nieces and nephews he gained from them. They all revered and held great respect for their Tio.

Although he was most known for his hard work and tough exterior, Eric wanted in his heart to be known as a passionate and loving man that did all he could for his family. He has now reunited with his loved ones gone before him, his parents John and Mildred, Aunt Beatrice (Bea), Dante – grandson and His Dear Wife Maxine. Eric leaves behind all four daughter and his grandchildren Denise, Terrell, Tyeise, Katrina, Miles, Candice, Anthony, Gedalia, Davon, Zaria, Tristan and 10 great-grands and 1 great-great grandson – Sy’hir. Eric G. Rooks you will be missed dearly, but we will see you round, like a donut!

Condolences to the family may be sent here.
