WILMINGTON — Frederick George Stegmuller Jr., known as Fred, passed away on August 23, 2024, at the Lower Cape Fear LifeCare Hospice facility. He was born in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, and spent his formative years in New Jersey before embarking on a life filled with adventure and love.
Fred met his wife, Mary Kathleen Berrie, fondly called Kathy, in Philadelphia. Their 30-year journey together took them from New Jersey to Philadelphia, to Southern California, where they resided in Hermosa Beach. They later moved to Northern Virginia, before settling in Wilmington, North Carolina. They traveled to many places spending time above and below the water; a testament to their enduring bond and shared adventures.
He loved his children, a son Luke Alexander, and daughter Aisling Rose, and loved sharing his passion for travel, boating, scuba, and skiiing with his family – taking them on vacations so they could try out their skills on the slopes or in the water. He loved cooking and entertaining and enjoyed many quiet evenings at home. In addition to his immediate family, Fred is survived by two sisters, and two brothers, and many nieces and nephews.
As a celebration of Fred’s vibrant life, a gathering will be held in Wilmington, NC on Saturday, October 12, 2024, allowing friends and loved ones to come together and honor his memory.
Fred’s deep connection to water and nature inspired his family to choose Tranquility Cremation by Aquamation for his final services, reflecting his enduring love for the elements that brought him peace and joy throughout his life.
Fred will be remembered for his adventurous spirit, unwavering love for his family, and the indelible mark he left on all who had the privilege of knowing him. May his spirit continue to inspire and guide those who hold him dear.
Donations in his memory can be made to his favorite charity No Kid Hungry.
Rest in peace, Fred.
