WILMINGTON — Richard “Dick” Hering, 77, of Wilmington, NC passed away on September 22, 2024 with his loving family by his side.
Dick was born on August 9, 1947 in Takoma Park, MD and grew up there. He married his high school sweetheart in 1967 and the two spent the next 57 years raising their family. The couple moved to Wilmington in 1989 with their family not far behind.
Dick had a passion for Thoroughbred Racing, collecting and auctioning memorabilia from the sport. He was regarded by his peers in the Thoroughbred Racing community as a historian whose knowledge went unmatched. Also a dog-lover, the dogs he had throughout his life were considered no different than his children. He was a man who brought joy to any gathering, never failing to entertain his family and friends with his sense of humor and wit.
He was a person who loved his family and protected them wholeheartedly. He was always eager to share his lifetime of experiences with those around him, serving as a wise counsel to all who listened. He was a careful listener as well, loving to hear even the most mundane updates in his family’s lives. He was continuously involved in the lives of his loved ones and cared strongly about their well-being and success. Dick will be remembered by those who loved him as a smart, fun-loving, and deeply caring man.
Dick was preceded in death by his parents Charlie and Marjorie, his brother Carl, and his dogs Roscoe and Tosmah.
He is survived by his wife Pam, his daughter Holly and son-in-law Jim, his sister Barbara, his five grandchildren including Nolan and Clay and his three nieces. He will be missed by his wife and all of his family members that loved him.
