WILMINGTON — Michael Louis McGoun, known affectionately as Mike, passed away on September 3, 2024, at the age of 65 in Wilmington, NC. He was born on March 18, 1959, in Buffalo, NY, and raised in Pittsburgh, PA.
Mike was preceded in death by his father John Hall McGoun (Mary McGoun) and mother Elizabeth Ann Baum McGoun. He is survived by his son John Michael McGoun (Casey McGoun) and daughter Jennie McGoun Hughes (Trey Hughes) along with his two grandsons Emory Taliaferro Hughes, Bettner Gaston Hughes and granddaughter Sonnie Elizabeth Hughes. He is also survived by his sister Linda Shellman (Mike, Sara and Matthew) and brother Wes McGoun (Laura, Travis, Brandon, Dylan and Casey).
Two of Mike’s greatest passions were music and the Pittsburgh Steelers. He also loved being outdoors, exploring trails, and riding his bike. He lived in many places throughout his life/career. One of his favorites was his home on Lake James in Nebo, NC with his love Diane McGoun (Jennifer Taylor, Jeffrey Porter, Jaclyn Simoneau), where he enjoyed boating, fishing and entertaining family and friends.
Mike had a loving heart. He was a very proud father and “grandpa” who found great joy when spending time with his family, specially his young grandchildren. He was a very spiritual man and devout Christian. Michael will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and all who knew him.
A celebration of life will be held at St. James Episcopal Church on Monday, September 16th at 10:30 a.m.
