OCEAN ISLE BEACH — Mr. William D. “Bill” Benton, 96, of Ocean Isle Beach, NC passed away on Thursday, July 25, 2024, in the Lower Cape Fear LifeCare, “Brunswick House” following a short illness.

Bill was a son of the late Claude and Blanche Howie Benton and was born in Monroe, NC on August 20, 1927. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his sister Virginia B. Scott.

He was a husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, patriarch and so much more than these words can convey to his beloved family.

Bill attended NC State University and Smith Business College. Bill was a gardener, US Army veteran, Real Estate Developer, Radio DJ, and Investor and Managing Partner of numerous Radio Stations, beginning in Monroe, High Point, Tabor City and finally WDZD, Shallotte/Ocean Isle Beach. He was very active in his community and was a dedicated commissioner of Ocean Isle Beach for twenty-four years.

He was responsible for developing several local communities including the Lockwood Folly Country Club, River Hills Community, Seaside North, and Little River Farms, as well as other commercial projects and retail centers.

Surviving are his loving wife of 40 years, Martha F. Benton; daughter Elizabeth Bellitto (Giacomo) of Charlotte, sons John Benton of Charlotte, Scot Benton of Charlotte, Eric Benton of Charlotte, grandchildren Bella Bellitto Gerber (Matt) of Charlotte, Christopher Bellitto of Charlotte. He also leaves his step-children, Al McLaurin (Kathy) of Shallotte Point, Elisabeth M. Powell (Mike) of Shallotte Point, John McLaurin (Lynn) of Ocean Isle Beach, Finch McLaurin also of Ocean Isle; step-grandchildren, Michael Powell (Sophie), Ben Powell (fiancée Morgan) all of Wilmington, Lindsey McLaurin, Allee McLaurin both of Shallotte Point, Danielle Stevens (Brad) of Shallotte, John McLaurin, IV (Jenna) of Whiteville, NC, Chloe McLaurin of Shallotte, Andrew Lowrance of Wilmington; step-Great Grandchildren, Isla Stevens of Shallotte, Eleanor McLaurin of Whiteville and the eagerly awaited baby boy Powell who is expected in two weeks.

To honor his wishes a private gathering of family will be held.
