SOUTHPORT — Thomas Edward “Tom” Balbert, age 83, of Southport, North Carolina passed away on Monday, July 15, 2024.
Mr. Balbert was born November 23, 1940 in New York City, son of the late John and Helen Balbert. He was raised in Astoria, NY. Tom was a veteran of the US Navy. He was a graduate of Fordham University in New York City where he obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in History.
He served on the New York State Police for 20 years, working some of those years in the Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Force. Tom and Margie retired and relocated to St. James Plantation in September, 2003. He was a founding member of the Richard H. Stewart American Legion Post 543 and a member of the Knights of Columbus for over 60 years. Tom was a devoted lifelong fan of the New York Giants, Mets, and Rangers.
Survivors include his wife, Margie Balbert; his brother, John Balbert; a sister, Kathleen Heaney; and numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews. He was preceded in death by a sister, Joan Zellway; and a beloved niece, Jill Rosker.
The Funeral Mass will be held at noon on Friday, July 19, 2024 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Southport.
