LELAND — Karen Marie Merrill, 78, of Leland died unexpectedly on Sunday, June 16 after a brief illness. She was born in Massachusetts, to the late Samuel Eaton Merrill and Marie Theresa (Kane) Merrill. She was the stepdaughter of the late Marilyn Merrill.

Karen was a retired registered nurse and a proud graduate of Boston City Hospital School of Nursing. She moved from Massachusetts to Hawaii as a young woman, loving the island life and travel. Australia was a favorite destination.

Following her time in Hawaii, Karen lived in Fullerton, California for several years and relocated to Leland decades ago, continuing her work in nursing and later as an IT coordinator for a hospice. She was an animal lover and the owner of many champion beagles. She bred beagles and hounds, building her stud business as Kalena. Karen continued with her service to others in her later years she turned to dog and cat rescuing, volunteering and fostering with Adopt an Angel and Rescue Connect.

Karen is survived by her siblings, John R. Merrill of Fairfax, Virginia; Mark P. Merrill and his wife Karen of Beaumont, California; and Sarah Merrill Whittey and her husband Kevin of Assonet, Massachusetts. She was predeceased by her dear sister-in-law YeSook Merrill.

She was a loving aunt to Kristian Merrill, Rebekah Ohmer, Maura and Lea Whittey. She is also survived by her caregiver, Julissa Bojorquez and the Bojorquez family of Leland.
