Barbara Williams Wicker, 83

Barbara Williams Wicker (Andrews Mortuary and Crematory)

HAMPSTEAD — Barbara Williams Wicker of Hampstead passed away peacefully on Saturday, February 3, 2024.  Barbara was born on January 22, 1941, to Joseph and Mary Elizabeth Williams, of Anderson, Indiana.

After a quick month long, whirlwind romance in Indiana, she married the love of her life (57 years), Robert Brooks Wicker, III, of Sanford, NC.  The couple immediately relocated to the beautiful coastal area of Scotts Hill, NC where they raised their lovely daughters Elizabeth Ann (Wicker) Gardner and Suzanne Brooks Wicker. They eventually were blessed with a beloved son-in-law, Derek Gardner, which they call their son.

Barbara’s charisma was infectious and contagious.  She was extremely outgoing and energetic. She lit up a room wherever she arrived. After a rewarding career with UNC-Wilmington, she enjoyed living the retirement life where she doted on her grandchildren, Derek, Jr. and David Brooks (sons of Beth and Derek Gardner).

Barbara and Brooks spent many afternoons walking the shores of South Topsail Island.  She loved to dance with her Topsail Tapper Group and was a fast-paced card player and enjoyed playing bridge with her Belvedere and Olde Point Bridge friends.   Barbara cherished her long walks every morning in her Mallard Bay neighborhood where she loved socializing with neighbors.  She also looked forward to sipping her evening glass of wine on her back porch with Brooks watching the boats go by and the sun setting.

Barbara was musically talented with a gift for the piano and enjoyed the fellowship of church family.  She was a 45-year member of Scotts Hill Wesleyan Chapel and volunteered many hours in the kitchen, nursery, and more often than not, she was on the front pew singing from the top of her lungs.

Barbara wishes for her love of family and community to continue through her sorority sisterhood that she was so passionate about.  Please in lieu of flowers make donations payable to P.E.O. Chapter CX and on the memo line notate PCE. Checks can be sent to 549 Iris Way, Hampstead, NC, 28443. Donations can also be made online at, P.E.O. Program for Continuing Education | P.E.O. International Giving Opportunities (https://donations.peointernational.org/peo-donation-pce).

Barbara leaves behind a beloved sister, Betsy MacLennan, along with many heartbroken nieces, nephews, grandchildren, children, son-in-law, sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, friends, neighbors, and her devoted husband Brooks.  The family is humbled and appreciative of the love, support, and encouragement the community has given to them during this time.

The family is welcoming friends and family for a drop-in visitation on Friday, February 9 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. at Andrews Hampstead Chapel located on 17730 Highway 17 North, Hampstead, NC 28443.
