WILMINGTON — Betty Cannon Coleman, age 76, of Wilmington peacefully left this earthly life for her heavenly home on December 24, 2023.
She was born in Wilmington on January 21, 1947 to the late Rev. Abram B. Cannon and Magalene Burney Cannon. One of seven children, she was the youngest daughter. She had a blessed childhood and remarked often how fortunate we were to grow up in a Christian home filled with love.
Betty is survived by her beloved son, Jon M. Coleman, two grandsons Jon-Austin Coleman (Julie) and Chandler Lee Coleman (Destiny). Also surviving are three great-grand children who were the light of her life. They are Leah Paige Coleman, Weston Laine Coleman and Kaiden Daniel Coleman. Also surviving to cherish the three sister relationship are Carol Fowler (Jimmy) and Margaret Anderson and special sisters-in-law Louise Cannon Rogers, Ruth Cannon and Dot Cannon. She has many nieces and nephews who will miss her greatly. She was predeceased by four brothers, Charles W. Cannon, Robert E. Cannon, Rev. Jim Cannon and Kenneth Paul Cannon.
Betty graduated from New Hanover High School and worked for Life of Virginia Ins. Co., Block Sportswear and New Hanover County Schools.
Betty was passionate about a few things including her faith, her family, all babies, but in particular Leah, Kaiden and Weston. Betty’s life drastically changed when her home was destroyed by a hurricane, but she never lost her love for a good porch rocking chair, a pretty fern and her charcoal grill. She is loved so much by so many and will be greatly missed. Rest in peace, Mema.
A memorial service to honor Betty’s life will be held at a time to be announced.
