Donald (Don) Albert Owen, 82

HAMPSTEAD — Donald (Don) Albert Owen, 82, of Hampstead NC died Tuesday, September 19th at Lower Cape Fear LifeCare in Wilmington NC.

Don’s early career was a sharpshooter with the NC Army National Guard from1966 to 1972. After the army, he worked with various companies until he founded Quality Molded Plastics of Siler City in 1989. Don then started Owen Venture Inc and Owen Property Management in the mid-1990s, focusing on land development and property management. To diversify his enterprise, Don bought a Railroad in Chadbourn and later Tomcat Brewery in Raleigh.

In his free time, Don was a competitive angler fishing in many tournaments, winning the last Arthur Smith King Mackerel Tournament.
He enjoyed all aspect of living at the coast and often visited Ocracoke NC, where he loved the land, the people and touring the island on a golf cart with his dog Molly. Don loved jumping in the car to visit his sisters and grandchildren, and especially loved spending time with his great grandson Owen. He would often end his trips at Johnson’s Drive-In in Siler City for one of their famous cheeseburgers.

He is survived by his wife of 27 years, Kerry Cooke Owen; daughter Kimberely Clark (John) of Knightdale; son Brian Owen of Hampstead; four grandchildren, Elizabeth Glass Chrismon (Drew), Mikayla Glass, Jake Owen, and McRae Owen; two great grandchildren, Owen and Kate Chrismon; three sisters, Ellen Reid Wilson, Shirley Ann Hull and Betty Jean Suther. Don is predeceased by his sister Dewey Lee Jones.

A Celebration of Life will be held October 28th at Hampstead United
Methodist Church Family Life Center at 2pm. The family would like to thank Don’s specialists and the doctors, nurses and staff at Novant Health New Hanover Regional Medical Center and Lower Cape Fear LifeCare for the extraordinary care he received in his final days.
