WILMINGTON — Mary Virginia Underwood Nelson, 79, passed away peacefully on August 24, 2023. Mary is survived by her husband Ray; daughter Heather Nelson Thompson (Scott); son Matthew Todd Nelson (Steven) and sister Nancy Underwood Patchell. But her pride and joy were the two that called her “Monny”, her grandchildren Matthew “Dawson” Thompson and “Anna Scott” Thompson.
A native of Norfolk VA, she was the daughter of Robert James Underwood and Virginia Kirby Underwood. She is preceded in death by her parents and sisters Carol Underwood Boyce and Bobbi Underwood Clemmons.
Mary’s heart belonged to Ray for almost 60 years. They met at Norview High School in homeroom class and started dating after high school graduation. They were married September 4, 1965. Mary earned a degree in Medical Technology from DePaul Hospital in Norfolk, Virginia, and enjoyed working for many doctor offices throughout her career as a medical technician and nursing assistant.
Mary cherished her church family at First Baptist Church of Wilmington. She spent countless hours as a volunteer at Lower Cape Fear Hospice, New Hanover Regional Medical Center, New Hanover County Animal Shelter, and several local elementary schools.
Her favorite pastimes included working in her flower gardens, listening to music, and of course dancing. Mary had a true love for all people (and animals) and made everyone feel special and welcome. Her laugh was contagious and her love of life shone through in her acts of kindness to all.
We will remember and celebrate her life and love of others on Saturday, September 9, 2023 2 p.m. at First Baptist Church of Wilmington, NC. Family will receive guests in the church parlor prior to the service from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. Immediately following the service the family invites friends and family back to the Nelson home to fellowship and honor Mary.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Lower Cape Fear Hospice Life Care via lifecare.org.
