Jacqueline “Jackie” Campbell Edwards, 92

WILMINGTON — Jacqueline “Jackie” Campbell Edwards, 92, passed away peacefully in her sleep on Saturday May 20,2023 in Charlotte, NC. She was born November 23,1930 to Jack and Miriam (Burbage) Campbell in Rocky Mount, NC.

Jackie was a longtime resident of Wilmington, NC and graduated from New Hanover High School in 1949. Upon graduation she was employed by the Atlantic Coastline where she had many fond memories of train trips to New York City, Washington DC, and other cities. She was also very proud of being one of the first women to be promoted from a secretarial role to a professional position with the Atlantic Coastline. She left the Coastline in 1956 upon her marriage to Curtis Hayes Edwards, Jr.

She was an active member of the First Baptist Church for over 75 years where she made many lifetime friends. Jackie and her husband had a very active life. They enjoyed the beach, dancing, bridge clubs, the Carolina Yacht Club, and church activities which they shared with many friends and family. The love and concern for her family was the most important component of her life. Even as her mind faltered with dementia and her memories and recognition faded, she would always say “I had 4 wonderful children and a husband that loved me for 60 years.” And this love of family also extended to anyone who entered her home, where she was a wonderful hostess and greeted everyone with a smile and fresh baked treats. She also enjoyed telling stories about the history of her family, and she was a member of both the National Society of the Colonial Dames of America and Daughters of the American Revolution.

Survivors include her 4 children and their spouses Curtis and Sandy Edwards of Richmond, VA, Anne and Mark DeVore of Raleigh, NC, James (Jim) and Julie Edwards of Atlanta, Ga and Lynn and Del Barnhill of Charlotte, NC. Additionally, she is survived by her brother, John Kerr Campbell, 9 grandchildren Kristen Edwards Tiller, Anne Edwards Smith, Craig Alan DeVore, Paige Winborne Devore, Jessica Britt Edwards, Victoria Pretlow Edwards, Caroline Hayes Barnhill, Campbell Yates Barnhill, and Rooks Edwards Barnhill and 4 great-grandchildren Jackson Owen Tiller, Campbell Grace Tiller, Jordan Anne Tiller, and Garret Hayes Smith. She was preceded in death by her husband Curtis Hayes Edwards, Jr, grandson Delwood Ray Barnhill, III, and parents Jack and Miriam Campbell.

A family only service will be held on June 5, 2023, at Oleander Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers please consider a donation in Jackie’s memory online to the non-profit Memory and Movement Center Charlotte or by mail to:
